While catching a serial murderer and running against time, Edward and Alphonse have to question themselves what what they’re doing would render them good again … or strip their dignity away. Along with military friends on their side Colonel Roy Mustang, Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye, and Lieutenant Colonel Maes Hughes, the brothers find themselves wrapped up in a national plot that leads them not just to the true existence of the mysterious Stone of the Philosopher but also to the turbid past of their world. Three years later the brothers look for the Stone of the Philosopher, a legendary artifact that helps an alchemist to transcend the Corresponding Trade Law. Devastated and lonely, it’s the expectation that all of them can finally return to their original bodies that drives Edward to get metal limbs named “automail” and become a state alchemist, the Fullmetal Alchemist.
It is only through Edward’s desperate sacrifice of the right arm that he can affix Alphonse ‘s soul to an armor suit. They are paying a terrible price for their transgression - Edward loses his left leg, his physical body Alphonse. Alchemy is constrained by this Analogous Trade Law - something the young brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric know even after attempting human transmutation: the one-act of alchemy banned.
